| Roman Dig, Millgate, 2005.

Shepherd Construction, in conjunction with Oxford Archaeology North carried out a dig on the Grand Arcade site, Millgate. It was paid for by developers Modus after the council made it a condition of planning permission. Not a lot is known about Roman Wigan, although it is believed to be a settlement known from Roman literature as Coccium. The fascinating photos below strengthen this belief and lead archaeologist Ian Miller said: "In Roman terms Wigan has gone from the 4th division to the Premiership."
| Latest dig, Millgate / Wiend, August 2008 Another excavation has taken place at Millgate / top of the Wiend prior to the new Wigan Baths being built on the site. Material has been found from every century (except the 15th for some reason, plague?) View the latest dig - 29 photos |
