Crank and Burtons

Started by: dave b (1328)

Do you remember it ?,behind Browns dentists ,you could park in the yard at the side,when i think back ,it was like that sketch in the Two Ronnies in the ironmongers shop, you could get anything ,used to take a while to get served ,and when you did ,you went out and your van was blocked in , Was it on Woodcock St ?.

It was a wonderful place with knowledgeable staff, if you didn't know what something was called and you explained it to them and what it was off they would fix you up with a part, ask them lot in B&Q and they look at you as though you are talking in chinese.

Billy Burton was interested restoring vintage bikes when I used to stay at their house in Orrell. I went to school with Leslie and knew Sydney as well.

Cranks was like a treasure trove for the building trade...you could get almost anything there.In the 60's Cranks,Wildes and Makinsons were the best.

I remember parking in Crank & Burtons yard while we did a job at Browns dentist,put a dorma window on the roof ,and thats were they made all the false teeth on the top floor,we were ripping the window out ,and they carried on working,talk about health and safety.

Just found it. You can't really see too much of the shop, but the bathroom sign is there.

It is with the Hope Street photos.

I knew I'd seen the pic somewhere.

No problem Dave.

It's all done with code and brackets. Think of the brackets as boxes. You put a code with the address of your item in one box, then a name for your link, then another box of code.

The address.

If you look at the top of this page you will see it's own address. http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/communicate/mb_message.php?opt=f2&opt2=&msd=447285&offset=0&subject=Crank%20and%20Burtons.

Now to get a photo's address, right click on it and see 'properties'.

This pic's address is http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/5/6ue73qom.jpg

So with that information you create the code and brackets

Then type a name for the link (or a comment) eg Crank & Burton

Then a closing code, again in brackets;

It is important that you don't leave any gaps in the line and that you use lower case letters for the url and /url parts.

Also note that the brackets must be the square type [ and ].

So, when it's al put togerher it will look like this;

Crank & Burton

You can only read that because I made the forward-slash red.

Otherwise you'd just see

Crank & Burton

Have a go, there's always someone who will help you out.

If you make a mistake and just a line of type appears, don't delete it. This way it is possible to see where the problem is.

Have fun.

When you sort that out, you can also stick pictures directly on the post in a similar way but slightly different code. img and /img instead of url and /url

[/img]

Gets this;

It means that the person has either been banned, or they have left and asked to be made inactive.

Also one fellow changed his internet provider and had to re register. He did so with a new name (Joseph1) and asked for his old account (xrh 59) to be de-activated.

The yard at the side of Crank & burtons, was the back yard entrance to Standishgate NatWest bank.
It was at the side of the small NatWest Market Bank on Woodcock St.
I parked regularly in that yard to pick my wages up by going through the back door of the Standishgate Branch.

Before that in the '40's, it was a long low shed which was the original Fish Market.. As a kid, I used to run past holding me nose, coz of the stink

just had a very interesting night with father in law, (jimmy dawber) .telling me tales of him and percy working here, how he would measure out asbestos and carry lead sheets with no protection. suprised how much he could remember in detail. his main hobby now is crown green bowling when he can.
